Summary: an office credenza is a low storage unit that stands behind the director's desk, with a 750 mm work surface so it lines up with the desk. Length follows the wall (1600–2400 mm), depth is 400–450 mm, and modules can be full doors, drawers, open shelves or a mix of all three. A credenza does not replace a filing cabinet: the cabinet stores standing archives in a separate area, while the credenza holds what must be within reach from the chair.
What an office credenza is and why it sits behind the director's desk
In an executive layout the desk faces the door and the credenza stands behind the chair. That position does three things at once: guests look at a display wall instead of a pile of paper; the files in use stay within arm's reach; and the printer or a small machine does not take up desk surface.
Because it is 750 mm high — level with the desk — the credenza also works as a second table during a two-person meeting. Many clients put a spare monitor or a presentation laptop on top and clear it with one movement of the chair.
Sizes: 1600, 2000 and 2400 mm
Length is set by the wall behind the desk, not by the number of files. Leave at least 60 cm on one side for chair movement and door clearance.
| Length | Typical modules | Best for | Room note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1600 mm | 2 doors + 1 shelf column | 3 × 4 m director office | Fits an 1800 mm desk with 30 cm each side |
| 2000 mm | 2 doors + 2 drawers + 2 open shelves | 4 × 5 m director office | Common span for a five-module credenza |
| 2400 mm | 4 doors + centre drawers + display shelf | Boardroom / executive lounge | Needs a wall of at least 3 m to avoid a heavy look |
Depth of 400 mm takes a standing A4 lever-arch file, while 450 mm leaves room for a small printer inside a cabinet. A credenza deeper than 500 mm eats into chair clearance and makes the room feel tight even when the floor area is unchanged.
Credenza vs filing cabinet vs side cabinet
The three are often confused in tender specifications. The difference is position, depth and what is stored.
| Aspect | Credenza | Filing cabinet | Side cabinet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Position | Behind the desk, facing guests | Archive wall / separate room | Attached beside the desk |
| Height | 750 mm (level with desk) | 1800–2000 mm | 600–750 mm |
| Main job | Display + active files + printer | Bulk F4/A4 archive | Extra work surface |
| Access | From the chair and from the guest side | Standing, two hands | From the chair |
A complete director office usually uses all three: a credenza for display and daily files, one filing cabinet for older documents and a side cabinet to extend the work area. A frequently ordered combination is the BG-2550 straight director desk with its credenza set.
Five module layouts most often ordered
Credenzas are ordered by module, with each column 400–600 mm wide. These combinations cover almost every office need.
1. Full doors
Two to four doors with adjustable internal shelves. Best for standing F4 archives, old catalogues and equipment that does not need to be seen daily.
2. Centre drawers
Two stacked drawers for stationery, stamps and documents needed while seated. Soft-close runners stop the knock that carries in a quiet room.
3. Open shelves
For awards, material samples or annual reports. Open shelves also make a credenza look lighter than a run of solid doors.
4. Five-module combination
The most common layout: full doors on the left and right, drawers in the centre and two open cubbies between them. The BG-2550B executive credenza uses this arrangement across 2000 mm.
5. Concealed power module
A cabinet with sockets and USB inside, so a guest's laptop charger does not hunt for a wall outlet. Useful in small meeting rooms where the credenza doubles as a second table.
Details that decide how the unit feels after a year
Four details are often skipped when quotations are compared, yet they decide service life:
- Handleless push-to-open. A clean face and nothing to catch on as you walk behind the desk. Insist on damped runners, not just a magnetic catch.
- Cable channel under the top. Printer and charger cables sit in a duct flush with the front edge, invisible from the guest side.
- Anti-tip bracket. Essential for any credenza taller than 750 mm or used while standing.
- Locks on doors, not on drawers. Important archives go behind full doors; centre drawers stay quick to open without a key.
Material and finish for a humid climate
A credenza used in Jakarta, Surabaya or Balikpapan faces 70–85 percent humidity. E0 MDF melamine panels with 2 mm PVC edging resist moisture better than particle board with open edges. On the wall side, leave a 20 mm gap so air circulates and mould does not grow behind the unit.
A powder-coated steel frame is more stable than an all-panel frame above 2000 mm. Where air conditioning runs only during office hours, E0 panels plus a steel frame avoid the movement caused by humidity swings.
How to size a credenza for a room
The formula our team uses when preparing layout drawings:
Credenza length = wall length − desk width − 2 × 60 cm circulation
Example: a 4 m wall with a 1.8 m desk gives 400 − 180 − 120 = 100 cm. That means a 1600 mm credenza will not fit on that wall with the desk parallel to it; the realistic options are a 1200 mm credenza or moving the desk 50 cm forward. We ask for photos and room dimensions before locking a size, because one wrong number makes the unit impossible to install.
Common ordering mistakes
- Choosing 500 mm depth to "fit more", then losing chair clearance.
- Matching the credenza height to a filing cabinet, so it can no longer serve as a second table.
- Forgetting to specify door handing when a room door sits close to the wall.
- Ordering without a cable channel, then the printer cable is visible from the guest side.
- Counting files instead of measuring the wall — the unit ends up too long and doors cannot open fully.
Frequently asked questions
Can a credenza be built into the desk?
It can, but for director offices we recommend a separate unit. A freestanding credenza is easier to move when the layout changes and does not lock the desk position.
How long does custom production take?
25–35 working days after colour and size confirmation, the same as our other desk and cabinet lines. For first orders, colour samples ship in 7–10 working days.
Can it ship with desks in one container?
Yes. One 40HQ container usually carries a director desk, credenza and filing cabinets for a single office floor. We prepare a knock-down pack with module numbers so on-site assembly follows the right order.
Are colours other than walnut available?
Natural oak, black oak, white and dark grey are standard. For a custom brand colour, MOQ is 15 pcs per colour.
